I love the intentional family dynamics included throughout Scripture. In laws can look more like outlaws sometimes. Families come as a package deal, tied to the one we marry. Cultural customs of the day relieved Ruth of any obligation. She was grieving the loss of her husband, yet chose to love his mother. I lost both of my parents 18 months apart, a couple of years prior to turning 40. My father-in-law passed away 6 months prior to our wedding. My MIL is the only remaining parent I have. We can make it difficult for others to love us at times, and my MIL is no exception. I often consider the beauty from ashes in Naomi & Ruth’s story, and continue to attempt to love her, even when she’d rather push everyone away. I know what it is to be loved by my Heavenly Father, and always try to love her as He does, even when it would be easier to pack up and go our separate ways. I continue to love her and pursue her, because that’s what Jesus does for me.
