“To truly experience the joy of Christmas, we must face the ugliness that exists in our world and in each and every heart. When we do, silver bells stop ringing. The lyrics from a more somber Christmas carol rise to form a lump in our throat: “And in despair I bowed my head / ‘There is no peace on Earth,’ I said / ‘For hate is strong and mocks the song / Of peace on Earth, good will to men.’”

This is reality for so many of us who did not experience the fairy tale Christmas this year or for some – never have. This is when we have to have faith in Immanuel – God IS with us – not based on sight or feelings but based on who God says He is. I thank God that even though my circumstances for the last 3 years are so far from what I ever thought my life would be, He is with me. He chose to send Jesus to break through the darkness of this world to be the Redeemer Savior. We are not at the end of the story! Glory to God in the highest!

We were all a bit shocked with the beginning of this devotion. But Truth often hurts. The world has taken the Christmas story and made it warm and fuzzy. :). God often requires us to do hard things or sends hard circumstances. Mary was blessed among women, but no woman wants to give birth alone on the floor of a barn! No woman would chose to only have cloth to wrap her newborn in. No woman would be thankful for an animal food trough as the cleanest place to put her baby down because it has been licked clean by goats and cows. The story of Jesus birth is a bruising of a blessing. It was dirty and gritty. God operates in the gritty, thank God! Otherwise He wouldn’t have anything to do with us!

In reply to Rhonda J.. Rhonda, it gives a momma like me such encouragement to know that saints like you are ministering to our wayward children who are incarcerated. We haven't heard from our daughter in prison since mid-October, and Christmas is so hard without her. I pray for her safety and for God to transform her during this tough stretch of time.
