You can then head to today\u2019s passages to see how this name functions in Scripture. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JESUS<\/strong>: The name of the incarnate Son of God<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Iesous<\/em>, or \u201cJesus,\u201d means \u201cYahweh saves.\u201d It is the Greek form of the Hebrew word <em>Yeshua<\/em>, a shortened version of <em>Yehoshu\u2019a<\/em>, which is translated as \u201cJoshua.\u201d Jesus, a common name in the first century AD, was the human name the Lord was given on earth. Mary and Joseph obediently gave the child this name because an angel of the Lord visited Joseph in a dream and told him, \u201cyou are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins\u201d (Matthew 1:21).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scripture often combines the name Jesus with the Greek word for messiah, <em>Christos<\/em>, or \u201cChrist.\u201d The name \u201cJesus Christ\u201d joins the two names in order to recognize Jesus as the anointed Savior.
