Google him, and you\u2019ll find less than enough to fill a Wikipedia page. He is a fleeting mention in a book of the Bible titled to another, greater man. Hananiah\u2019s legacy has turned to dust\u2014ah, but dust gets reshaped into beauty in God\u2019s kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hananiah and the other names listed in Nehemiah 12 left their mark on the world through raucous rejoicing. With one blast of his trumpet Hananiah declared what\u2019s truer than truer than true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Lord reigns!\u201d \u201cHe really loves us!\u201d \u201cHe alone can rebuild what is broken.\u201d \u201cCome and worship Him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can\u2019t you picture Hananiah perched on the rebuilt wall that once stood in ruins? Can\u2019t you feel joy rise again in his chest after the devastation of God\u2019s people and His city had tried so hard to snuff it out? Can\u2019t you sense the ground begin to hum again with the hope that God never abandons His people and that He\u2019s never, ever done working all things to our good? Can\u2019t you hear that, and so much more, in Hanahiah\u2019s choice to blow the trumpet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does it make you want to sing praises too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do it! I can picture Hananiah and the others waving us in to join the celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve got your own ruins. I\u2019m sure of it. All fallen creatures do. You\u2019ve seen hopes smashed and dashed. You\u2019ve looked around and wondered, \u201cWhat can God do with all this mess?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you can also have Hanahiah\u2019s hope. You can open your Bible and know: What God has scattered, He often gathers. What He allows to crumble, He also rebuilds. Though He convicts, He also forgives. Sing Hanaiah\u2019s song:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>On that day they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced because God had given them <strong>great joy<\/strong>.<br>\u2014Nehemiah 12: 43<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like the Israelites of Nehemiah\u2019s era, we know what sorrow tastes like. The Christian life is no pie-in-the-sky hope built on happy thoughts. And yet, we can also be people who, \u201ccelebrate the joyous dedication with thanksgiving and singing accompanied by cymbals, harps, and lyres\u201d (v.27).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because God has given us \u201cgreat joy\u201d (v.43). He has given us Himself. Because of Jesus we ought to never stop singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hananiah is more than a nobody. He and other priests stood on that wall to declare a message\u2014<em>the message<\/em> your beating heart is dying to hear. You were made to praise the Lord. To be a trumpet blower in the procession of the Lord is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grab a pot and wooden spoon.<br>Warm up those vocal chords.<br>Decide to praise Jesus so loudly that your rejoicing will be heard far away (v.43).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leave your mark on the world by praising the One who is worthy. Soon, we will join our own procession. We will enter the gates of heaven with thanksgiving.
